The Sages of the Talmud taught that there are 3 partners in the creation of every human being: A father who gives the ‘white’ parts of the body; a mother who gives the ‘red’ parts; and God - who is present in the union of the two parents - and who gives us our consciousness, our 5 senses and our Soul.
This whole picture can be seen as just one figure, a Grandfather סבא (associated with Keter) whose ‘head’ contains the Letter Aleph א in yellow. The white surrounding his head is a halo of Light that represents his unconditional Love. He embraces all the members of this Family Tree of Life.
Father and Mother אבא ואמא (associated with Chochmah and Binah) are included in Grandfather’s ‘beard’. They are the two arms of the one large figure. Father’s head contains a blue Final Mem ם representing Water. (The transparency of Water is sometimes called ‘white’ - thus, in the teaching above, the father gives the ‘white’ parts of the body.) Mother’s head contains a red Shin ש representing Fire.
These Parents each have another letter above their heads like a crown or tefilin. They each are completed by each other - thus, Father’s crown is a small red Shin ש; and Mother’s crown is a small blue Mem ם. As it says in Sefer Yetzirah, “Understand with Wisdom (Chochmah) and be Wise with Understanding (Binah)”.
The dark-haired Son בן (standing between the ‘hands’ of his Parents) is associated with the 6 lower Sefirot. His ‘face’ gives testimony to what he has received from both Parents. Between his ‘hands’ is the Daughter בת (associated with Malchut). She is the 4th figure in this picture and has a final Mem ם in her head. She represents the 4th Element - Earth - and she nurtures all Creation - represented by the small Child between her hands.
