This
Psalm, called the Psalm of Thanksgiving, describes four
perilous situations from which God redeems us, and for
which the Talmud ordains a special blessing.
"GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR HE
IS GOOD, HIS KINDNESS ENDURES FOREVER. Let those redeemed
by God say it, those He redeemed from the hand of
Trouble. And from the lands He gathered them, from
the east and from the west, from the north and from
the south...
1) They wandered in the wilderness
in a desolate path, an inhabited city they did not
find. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
Then they cried out to God in their trouble, from
their distress He rescued them. And He led them in
a straight path which brought them to an inhabited
city. LET THEM THANK GOD FOR HIS KINDNESS, AND FOR
HIS WONDERS TO THE CHILDREN OF MEN...
2) Those who sit in darkness and
in the shadow of death, bound in affliction and iron.
For they defied the words of God, and scorned the
counsel of the Most High... They cried out to God
in their trouble, and from their distress He delivered
them. LET THEM THANK GOD FOR HIS KINDNESS, AND FOR
HIS WONDERS TO THE CHILDREN OF MEN. For He has broken
the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron asunder...
3) The foolish were afflicted
on account of their sinful ways and iniquities. Their
soul abhorred all food, and they came near the gates
of death. They cried out to God in their trouble,
and from their distress He delivered them. He sent
His word and healed them, and they thus eluded their
destruction. LET THEM THANK GOD FOR HIS KINDNESS,
AND FOR HIS WONDERS TO THE CHILDREN OF MEN...
4) Those who go down to the sea
in ships, that do work in mighty waters... He spoke
and raised a stormwind, and lifted up its waves. They
rise to the sky and descend to the depths, their soul
melts away in misery... They called out to God in
their trouble, and from their distress He removed
them. He calmed the storm, and made the waves still...
LET THEM THANK GOD FOR HIS KINDNESS, AND FOR HIS WONDERS
TO THE CHILDREN
OF MEN...
The upright will see this and
rejoice, and all iniquity will shut its mouth. Whoever
is wise will consider these things, and will contemplate
the kindnesses of God."
